Some in the game may feel it's just not cricket, but it seems the pink balls to be used in next month's historic day-night Test match between the Black Caps and Australia in Adelaide are the way of the future.
As such, the Black Caps have been using the new balls in a special training camp in Hamilton, and it is going to take some time to get used to them.
Pace bowler Trent Boult hasn't been terribly fond of the new pink balls, having previously said it felt like a hockey ball.
But he's coming round to the idea of bowling with the novelty nut next month, getting his first chance to try it out in the middle today.
"It's a little bit different," Boult says. "It's interesting, [to] put it that way."
Interest in the pink ball is high, especially how it performs and holds up compared to the traditional red version.
The special three-day training camp is all about testing how the ball behaves in different conditions.
Last night the team held a fielding session under the lights – Boult didn't have too much trouble seeing it, but it was a different story under the high ball.
"It felt similar to what a white ball does in a black sky," wicketkeeper BJ Watling says. "You lose a bit of depth perception as such."
Players get a first chance to bowl and bat with the new balls under lights tonight, as preparations continue for the third and final Test which the team hopes will be a history maker in more ways than one.
