In my mind there's no question that, in life, everyone deserves a second chance.
In this case, Cathrine Latu deserves another chance to prove she's got the goods to be goal shoot for the Silver Ferns.
Before the Netball World Cup in August, Waimarama Taumaunu needed to take make changes if New Zealand were to have any hope of being real contenders in the tournament.
Latu was a casualty of that change but I firmly believe that risk paid off for both the team and Latu.
In dropping the player that was supposed to succeed Irene Van Dyk, the team exceeded expectations, beating Australia in pool play although ultimately coming up short in the final.
Meanwhile, back in New Zealand, Latu was resigned to watching her teammates from the couch. She did some soul searching, contemplated starting a family and ultimately learned a few home truths about herself.
Then once she "got over herself" – her words, not mine – the 28-year-old trained hard and played with a new lease on life in grassroots netball. It allowed her to rediscover her love of the game, a game she is now fighting tooth and nail to represent her country for.
Latu told me today she started taking things for granted when she was in the Ferns. Sometimes she could find herself complaining about not sleeping in her own bed. She says she needed a kick up the bum and now she says sees things very differently.
While I haven't been in the camp to see how she's fared against the other shooters since trials started on Sunday, from the quarter I saw today, Latu is looking the fittest I've seen her, revitalised and fighting as hard as she can.
Let's not forget she is one the most accurate shooters in the world.
Taumaunu said today she wants to build on the gains made in Sydney. No, Latu wasn't in Sydney, but with this four-Test series against Australia Taumaunu's last hurrah as coach, she needs the best team which would include a reinvigorated Latu.
There's no doubt in my mind she should be back in the team named tomorrow.
So if Cathrine Latu comes back into the fold, who misses out?
Well, with Maria Tutaia taking a break and making herself unavailable for this Constellation Cup series, a shooting spot is already up for grabs.
But let's be honest, everyone loves a good comeback story. Take Matt Giteau in the Wallabies at the weekend or the Cowboys NRL victory on Sunday night.
The question now is if tomorrow is the start of Catherine Latu's.
