Black Caps paceman Tim Southee says the chance to make history is a motivating factor as the team get set to tackle Australia in three Tests.

The team departed for Canberra today and Southee says he hasn't felt this excited for a series in a long time.

"It's a chance to do something no other side has done for a number of years now," Southee said.

The first test in Brisbane will mark 30 years since Sir Richard Hadlee took nine for 52 in a first Test win at the Gabba which helped set up New Zealand's last series win on Australian soil.

"It just shows you how tough a place it is to go and win a Test series," Southee said.

"That's why you play the game, to go and achieve things like that. If that comes true and we can go over there and achieve something, I'm sure it'll be something that'll rank highly among all players."

The Black Caps prepare for the series with a two-day match against a Cricket Australia XI this weekend, before they begin a four-day fixture against the same opposition in Sydney next Thursday.
