The All Blacks edged Australia 34-17 in the Rugby World Cup final, but it did come with a couple of unwanted nerves.

The All Blacks shot out to what looked like an unassailable lead with tries to Nehe Milner-Skudder and Ma'a Nonu, but a yellow card to Ben Smith gave Australia a chance to answer with two of their own.

But the men in black would be too strong, Beauden Barrett racing away to seal the victory and create history as the All Blacks became the first team to defend the Rugby World Cup.

Anyway, here is how social media saw the match with a collection of the best tweets from across the day.

An inside look at the Wallabies arriving at Twickenham, thanks to Quade Cooper (and before you ask, no, he wasn't in the match day 23) We had New Zealand and Australian sportspeople all over the globe tuning in. The Red Arrows perform a spectacular fly over Twickenham. And the William Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup arrives pitchside. Australia made a strong start on defense, Cooper ripping the ball off Kaino to stop try as the All Blacks were nullified. But bang on halftime, Nehe Milner-Skudder popped up with the first try. A collection of Kiwi sportsmen were keen to chip in at halfitme with their 2 cents. Even in tense times, Guy Williams was on hand to have a laugh at poor Zac Guildford's expense. Dom Harvey sums up one punter's feelings. The only think Tim Batt was missing from this tweet was mentioning the black milk. Jane was keen to call it early... And was sold on it after Nonu scored early in the second half. Fans back in New Zealand react to Nonu's try. Dan Carter's conversion brings up a new record Black Cap Jimmy Neesham wasn't sold on it being a yellow card for Ben Smith. And things take a nervous tur, the Wallabies coming back with two tries. But when in doubt, put the ball in DC's hands and let him work his magic. But Carter's drop goal wasn't enjoyed by everyone, with former Wallaby Lote Tuqiri taking exception.

As if we needed another reason not to like Piers Morgan. The cheek.

New Zealand hang on to win it. Was there ever any doubt? Trophy

And as George Gregan famously said...
