The San Francisco 49ers have cut former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne from their roster.

Running back and punt return specialist Hayne was waived to make space for Kendall Gaskins, who was promoted from the team's practice squad.

Hayne made headlines around the National Football League (NFL) after he secured a spot on the 49ers final 53-man roster, but failed to make an impact after showing promise in pre-season

The 27-year-old joined the 49ers in March as a free agent.

Hayne appeared in six games for the team, carrying the ball eight times for 25 yards and returning eight punts for 76 yards.

There was thought that Hayne might be given a chance with No.1 running back Carlos Hyde suffering from a stress fracture, but the team thought otherwise calling up Gaskins, a player who has bounced around the league since going undrafted in 2013.
