Phoenix insisting on 'the right deal'

Rob Morrison says he wants to stick with the Phoenix for the long-term (3 News)

Wellington Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison admits he has contemplated pulling the pin on his ownership of the football club.

Morrison has been negotiating a long term A-League license for the club with Football Federation Australia since last year, and is confident the Phoenix will receive their desired result despite the FFA declining their 10-year proposal last month, instead offering four.

"We have to do the right deal, not any deal," Morrison told 3 News.

"I wouldn’t say it is only 10 years, it could be longer, but it’s not four years."

Morrison has called on key stakeholders to lift their contribution to the club, and is in talks with broadcasters and New Zealand Football about improvements going forward.

The club loses money currently, but losses are decreasing and Morrison says while he's been discouraged at times, he wants to stick with the Phoenix for the long-term.

"At times you feel like yeah, it is a bit frustrating, but I haven’t pulled the pin yet," Morrison said.

If he did, it would be a potentially fatal blow to football in New Zealand.
