The most well-known form of polo might be on horseback but there are numerous variations to the sport.
You can play it on a camel or an elephant, in a canoe or in a pool.
But it can also be played on bikes and next year Timaru will be hosting the world's best.
If you've never heard of bike polo, that's not surprising, the community is small and that can make getting into the sport tough.
Despite the speed, swinging mallets and the odd fall, the three-on-three game is hardly hell on wheels once you figure it out.
Last weekend nine teams battled it out for the national title and a place at next year's world champs to be hosted in Timaru.
