Australia have been bowled out for 224, snatching a first-innings lead of 22 runs over New Zealand in Adelaide.
The Black Caps were relentless in the first session of on day two, claiming six wickets in the while giving up just 62 runs.
But Australia fought back after the tea break with Peter Nevill and Nathan Lyon freeing up the arms and playing shots.
New Zealand looked likely to hold a strong first innings lead, but Nevill went on to bring up his half century and drag the hosts back into the contest.
Lyon would eventually go for 34, but not before combining with Nevill to put on 74 runs in their ninth wicket partnership.
Mitchell Starc -- who arrived at the ground in a moonboot and will not bowl in the second innings -- came out to bat and managed to slog his way to 24 with six boundaries in a brave effort.
Nevill (66) made way when his lofted drive picked out Mitchell Santner to end the innings.
New Zealand came out to bat for 20 minutes before the dinner break, bringing up 22-0 to level the scores heading to the break.
