Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund to retire at end of season

Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.

The veteran defender joined the Phoenix in 2008 and has made 143 appearances for the club.

He has been battling a number of injuries this season, including a concussion an hamstring injury.

Named player of the year for the 2011/11 and 2011/12 seasons, Sigmund formed a strong central defensive partnership with captain Andrew Durante. 

The 34-year-old made 31 appearances for the All Whites after making his debut against Oman in 2000. He retired from international football in November 2014.
