A last-minute miracle strike from Olivia Merry to secured New Zealand a 2-1 win over Britain and a semi-final spot at the women's World League Final hockey tournament in Argentina.

The world No.4-ranked New Zealanders, who had downed Britain 3-1 at last year's Champions Trophy, looked in control until a late British surge won a controversial penalty stroke which levelled the scores midway through the fourth quarter.

With the prospect of a penalty shoot-out looming, the Kiwis kept on fighting and were rewarded when Merry's reverse stick shot from a narrow angle snuck past British keeper Maddie Hinch.

The result was devastating for the British, particularly after their 1-0 defeat of world No.2 Australia in pool play.

Black Sticks skipper Anita Punt opened the scoring midway through the second quarter after Hinch had made two top-notch rapid-fire saves.

The goal was fair reward after the Kiwis had dominated possession and territory, peppering the British goal with seven shots while needing to defend just one at the other end.

That came in the last 10 seconds of play before halftime after the Black Sticks conceded a penalty corner, but the Kiwi defence held firm to take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

World No.6 Britain came out firing from the break, looking sharper up front and shutting down the width of the Black Sticks' attack.

Trailing by one with less than seven minutes remaining, the British steamed back into contention after winning a penalty stroke which Helen Richardson-Walsh coolly converted to level the scores until Merry's late strike.

The Black Sticks beat Germany and South Korea in pool play, but lost to the world No.1 Dutch team 4-1. They play the winners of the quarter-final between Australia and Germany in the last four.
