The Wellington Phoenix have drawn 1-1 in their eventful A-League match-up with Sydney FC at Westpac Stadium this evening.

Both sides had good chances to take the lead throughout the game, with Sydney FC spurning a penalty at the start of the second half before scoring the first goal in the 84th minute.

But an 89th minute penalty for the Phoenix's Fijian forward Roy Krishna levelled the scores, with a draw the result at the end of the match.

The game started well for Sydney as they gained early control of possession, but the first meaningful chance came the way of the Phoenix.

Michael McGlinchey's scuffed cross in the 22nd minute found Jeffrey Sarpong six yards out, but the former Ajax forward was unable to capitalise from close range.

Just three minutes later Roy Krishna pinpoint pass came to Roly Bonevacia, but the 24-year-old couldn't sort his feet out in time to get a shot off.

The first period ended with a free-kick from Sydney's Brandon O'Neill cannoning back off the crossbar in almost the last play of the half.

The second half started in controversial circumstances, Sydney FC youngster Andrew Hoole appearing to dive in the process of winning a penalty.

However, he wasn't able to convert the opportunity he had fashioned, Glen Moss getting down well to his right to deny the Australian.

Chances continued to flow in the second period, before Sydney's Filip Holosko opened the scoring with a wonderful curled shot from just inside the box.

There was to be more drama, however, the Phoenix earning a questionable foul in the box as they challenged from a wide free-kick.

Roy Krishna stepped up to take the penalty, slotting the ball in the bottom corner and earning the Phoenix a well-deserved point.
