FIFA has announced it has fired General Secretary Jerome Valcke, once one of the global football body's most powerful figures, amid alleged corruption involving World Cup ticket sales.

The FIFA emergency committee decided to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect. Jerome Valcke is therefore no longer the secretary deneral of FIFA," Zurich-based FIFA said in a statement

"The employment relationship between FIFA and Jerome Valcke has also been terminated.

"The duties of the secretary general will continue to be assumed by the acting secretary general, Dr Markus Kattner."

FIFA recommended that the 55-year-old Frenchman should be banned from football for nine years.

Last week FIFA's ethics judges announced they had opened formal proceedings against Valcke, who had already been suspended by the football body's ethics watchdog.

Valcke, who was appointed in 2007, also faces bribery allegations, but denies any wrongdoing.
