It appears the McLean Park groundsmen will have some work to do if the Black Caps are to play tomorrow after torrential rain hit Napier.

New Zealand are set to take on Pakistan in their second ODI but are facing a race against time in a battle with the elements to clear the field of large amounts of surface water.

8.2 millimetres of rain has fallen since yesterday afternoon with 14.1 millimetres expected by this afternoon.

3 News understands the pitch is at risk of soaking as well, with the covers not expected to withstand the water.

The Black Caps currently lead Pakistan 1-0 in the three ODI series after their 70-run win in Wellington on Monday.
