Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick is working with the team he's got, rather than planning any last-minute transfer swoops for a striker.

Merrick said the club wouldn't be looking to sign anyone in the January transfer window, instead opting to shuffle his formation in hopes of the team scoring more goals.

The Phoenix's last win came against Melbourne Victory in Auckland, with the club picking up just two points from their last six matches.

Another challenging fixture away to Melbourne City awaits the Phoenix, and Merrick is planning on pushing players forward behind striker Blake Powell to create chances.

"We're going to play with Blake up front and have three very attacking midfielders this week rather than playing with two high strikers," Merrick said.

Merrick said he plans on using Alex Rodriguez in the role instead of Vinnie Lia, lining the Spaniard up alongside Roly Bonevacia and Michael McGlinchey.

"[Rodriguez] is the more attacking one, he's given the free rein to go box-to-box and he's got the energy to do it.

"So he's got to get up alongside McGlinchey and Bonevacia. Those three have got to support Blake Powell, it's what we've been working on all week and it certainly came off well in the training game."

Merrick rebuffed the suggestion confidence was to blame for goals drying up, instead choosing to focus on player movement in and around the box.

"I think it's more to do with the process of getting the ball into goal scoring areas and getting numbers in there and the quality of that final pass.

"That's what [Chris Greenacre] and I have been working on. A great deal of work on midfielders coming through, the quality of the final pass, and getting four players in the penalty box when the ball is delivered."

Jeffrey Sarpong and Louis Fenton have both returned to running in training, but Merrick ruled out either of them being fit enough to play in Monday night’s fixture.

Manny Muscat is likely to slot back into the backline alongside Andrew Durante after serving his suspension.
