Australia women's basketball star Liz Cambage has hit out at a national teammate who posted a photo of herself in blackface on social media.

Australia Opals forward Alice Kunek posted a photo of herself to Instagram with her face painted brown, dressed in ripped white clothes and a beanie in a portrayal of rapper Kanye West.

The 25-year-old was alongside Melbourne Boomers teammate Tess Madgen, who was also in fancy dress.

Cambage, who is of Nigerian descent through her father, took to Twitter to lambast Kunek over her costume choice.

"I'm am so shocked and disturbed to see this behavior from someone I'm meant to call a "teammate" (sic)," Cambage wrote on the social media site under a screenshot of the picture.

"blackface is disgusting, I honestly have no words. (sic)

"People wonder why I have issues with some @BasketballAus teammates, I've been dealing with these behavior since we were kids (sic)."

Kunek deleted the post and apologised after Cambage's tweets.

"I am so unbelievably sorry to all my followers who were offended by my previous post. It was never my intention to offend anyone at all. It was an honest mistake," Kunek wrote on Instagram.

"People who know me, know that I don't judge others based on the colour of their skin.

"One of the things I love most about basketball is that I get to play with and against women from different countries, religions & upbringings and be united as a team. I never meant to offend any team mates, fans, or people in the community."

Cambage has taken teammates to task before, including last year when she hit back at criticism from fellow opal Rachel Jarry over the centre's decision to work at a music festival instead of going to training camp.
