Australia have left out Usman Khawaja for the series opener against the Black Caps at Eden Park.
Khawaja joined the ODI squad following Aaron Finch's hamstring injury.
But selectors have stuck with Shaun Marsh as David Warner's partner at the top of the order for Wednesday's clash in Auckland.
"Shaun's been in the squad, he played well in Australia and I think he deserves the first opportunity, so he's going to get that out here tomorrow," said captain Steve Smith.
Speaking on behalf of the Australian selectors, Smith added that Khawaja is likely to feature in one of the three one-day games ahead of the Test series.
"I think he will play one of the games, at least.
"He does need a hit going into what is a big Test series for us and he's batting extremely well so he's unlucky to miss out. But Shaun's going to get the first opportunity."
Josh Hazlewood, who hasn't played since January 12, returns to spearhead Australia's attack.
"We've got quite an inexperienced bowling attack. We've got quite a few guys that are out but the guys are learning quite quickly," Smith said.
Australia named no spin bowlers in their XI.
Legspinner Adam Zampa, paceman Scott Boland and Khawaja are the three members of the 14-man touring party left out of the XI.
Australia XI: Shaun Marsh, David Warner, Steve Smith (capt), George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade, James Faulkner, John Hastings, Kane Richardson, Josh Hazlewood.
