Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao's contract with Nike has been terminated in the wake of his recent comments about homosexuals being "worse than animals".

Pacquiao made his comments during a short television interview about his opposition to same-sex marriage.

Nike released a statement on Pacquiao, labelling his comments as "abhorrent".

"Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community," read the statement.

"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent."

Nike endorsed Pacquiao  for just over eight years.

Pacquiao made his comments during a short television interview about his opposition to same-sex marriage.

"Have you seen any animal having male-to-male or female-to-female relations?" Pacquiao said earlier this week on a Filipino television show.

"If you have male-to-male or female-to-female [relationships], then people are worse than animals."

Pacquiao apologised on Twitter hours after the television segment.

The 37-year-old is in the process of preparing for what is tipped to be his last fight against Timothy Bradley on April 9.
