Legendary West Indies batsman Viv Richards has given his congratulations to Brendon McCullum on breaking the record he held for fastest Test century.

McCullum yesterday scored 100 runs off just 54 balls against Australia at Hagley Oval, eclipsing the record Richards created of reaching his century from 56 balls against England in 1986. He now shares second-fastest Test century with Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq.

Richards now coaches Pakistan Super League side Quetta Gladiators, and took the time to send a heartfelt message to the Black Caps captain.

"Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Brendon. I’ve been a great fan of you for many years – well done on your achievement," Richards said in the video.

"If there was going to be an individual who you'd have liked to surpass whatever you achieved in life, certainly it would be you.

"You're one of those individuals who helped to put bums on seats. Long may it continue."

McCullum yesterday said he was "embarrassed" to have broken Richards' record.

"Viv was my idol growing up, he was an incredible cricketer. I’m almost a little bit of embarrassed to go past him, to be honest," said McCullum.
