Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum's confirmed Tim Southee and Trent Boult will spearhead the New Zealand bowling attack in tomorrow's first Test against Australia in Wellington.

Southee's pulled up well from training yesterday and will make his international return after a five week lay-off recovering from bone bruising in his left foot.

Trent Boult's got over his illness that saw him miss the deciding ODI in Hamilton and the duo will be backed up by Doug Bracewell who has seen off Matt Henry and Neil Wagner for the third seamer role.

BJ Watling's been named at wicket-keeper despite a back niggle, Mark Craig is the specialist spinner and as expected Henry Nicholls will become the 269th test cricketer for New Zealand, batting at number four.

Nicholls, 24, has played 10 one-day internationals this summer and looked at home on the international scene. Ross Taylor's injury has opened the Test door for him.

McCullum predicted a bright future for him a the top level, as a player who put the team first.

"He's such an unflappable guy," McCullum said. "He's come into the environment and he's scored some important runs already in some clutch moments for us as well.

"Even the other night when he got out he was trying to take the aggressive option, and that's a really good sign for a guy entering into international cricket."

Meanwhile Australian captain Steve Smith's confirmed his eleven, with right-arm fast bowler Jackson Bird picked in what will be his first test since August 2013.
