It's back to the grind for the Black Caps bowlers on day three of the second Test against Australia in Christchurch.

The New Zealanders claimed two late wickets on a day otherwise dominated by the tourists with Steve Smith and Joe Burns both making big centuries.

Neil Wagner's had to rely on a barrage of bouncers to get wickets with conditions not offering a lot for the pace bowlers.

"It was an absolute belter of a day, there wasn't a cloud in the sky," Wagner bluntly stated when asked why the ball wasn't swinging.

"At times it's quite tough to make a ball swing in conditions like that and obviously it dried the wicket out quite a bit as well.

"With the sun baking on it as it did, it's quite hard."

A cool and cloudy day is forecast to greet the two teams when play resumes this morning.

Adam Voges and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon are at the crease for Australia, who restart on 363-4, just seven runs behind the Black Caps' first innings total.
