Novak Djokovic questions equal pay in tennis

Novak Djokovic has no issue with the way those in the women's game fought to get more prize money, but feels the men deserve more.

The world tennis number one spoke out after Serena Williams took exception to comments made by Indian Wells tournament director Raymond Moore.

Moore made claims that lady players were riding on the coat tails of men's tennis.

While Djokovic disagrees with Moore's remarks, he still feels those playing in the men's game deserve more money because they attract more attention and sell more tickets.

"I think that our men's tennis world, ATP world, should fight for more because the stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men's tennis matches," Djokovic said.

"I think that's one of the reasons why maybe we should get awarded more."

Combined Masters events like Indian Wells and Miami pay the same to men and women, and in 2007 Wimbledon joined other Grand Slams in offering equal prize money.

As for television viewing figures, 973 million watched ATP Premier events and finals (men's) on television and digital, compared to 395 million for the WTA events.
