Shot put rivalry pushes pair to their best

Shot putter Tom Walsh has claimed his seventh national title at the Track and Field Champs in Dunedin.

He broke the New Zealand resident record in the process.

But the Cantabrian is confident he's got more in the tank.

It was the Kiwi showdown Walsh and Auckland's Jacko Gill had been avoiding for months.

Both have been battling niggly injuries, but finally got to compete head to head.

"You know we dodged each other for a little bit. I was scared of him to start with, and maybe he was scared of me the second time. But it was good for us to line up today and put a good show on for the nationals," says Walsh.

The pair have been in good form this summer, both breaking the New Zealand resident record in recent months.

Today it was Walsh's turn to shine.

"I felt like there was a little bit more there maybe... I had the handbrake on a little bit today, I'm not sure why. But it's still good, always a 21-metre throw is always a good comp, so can't complain about that," says Walsh.

Gill had to settle for silver with a best throw of 20.23 metres.

But both men have already passed the A qualifying standard for Rio, and believe the Kiwi rivalry gives them a boost.

"I think it really inspires me to throw a lot further," says Gill. "And you know when I see him throw far, I kind of want to throw further too, so that's really cool."

Walsh flies off to a meet in Melbourne this weekend, but the two Kiwis face off again in a fortnight at the World Indoor Champs.
