Liverpool scored either side of halftime as they beat Manchester United 2-0 in their first leg Europa League tie at Anfield.

Liverpool took the lead through a Daniel Sturridge penalty after Memphis Depay dragged down Nathaniel Clyne.

The lead was doubled by Roberto Firmino in the second half when he fired home from six yards out after a poor clearance from Michael Carrick exposed United.

Marouane Fellaini had the best chance for Man United late, but couldn't keep his back post header on target.

Liverpool had chances to extend the lead, but will leave disappointed they couldn't add to their tally heading into the second leg, which will be played next Thursday (Friday NZT).

Before the second leg, Manchester United host West Ham United in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
