New Zealand Diamondblacks pitcher John Holdzkom has been picked up by the Chicago White Sox.

The right-hander was cut from the Pittsburgh Pirates after failing to make the 25-man roster for the season.

Holdzkom starred for the Pirates in 2014, but niggling shoulder injuries kept him in the minors for the 2015 season.

Coming into spring training this year the Pirates had further concerns about Holdzkom's health because of a loss of velocity in his pitching.

After not being picked up from the waiver wire, Holdzkom became a free agent and could sign with anyone.

Snapped up less than a week later, the 28-year-old isn't taking his second chance in the majors for granted.

"It's always exciting to know that a team wants you to play for them and I will cherish this opportunity," Holdzkom said.

"The main focus now is to get healthy and wherever they send me, I will be happy to report."
