Former Breakers star Kirk Penney could make a shock return to the club next season.

The Illawarra Hawks today announced the 35-year-old wouldn't be returning to the club he had a standout season with for "family reasons".

"The Illawarra Hawks regret to announce that due to family reasons, Kirk Penney will not be returning to the club for the 2016-17 NBL season," the franchise said on Facebook.

"Kirk informed the club late last week of his decision, and we wish him and his family all the best for the future."

The Breakers announced today they were making an announcement on player recruitment tomorrow but wouldn't comment on today's speculation.

Penney played for the Breakers from 2007 to 2011 where he played a part in their first ANBL championship win.

If he were to sign with the Breakers it would likely be his last stop in a professional career that has featured stops in Israel, Lithuania, Spain, Turkey, Germany and the NBA after a successful college career.
