Three New Zealand rugby referees will officiate in the Sevens competition at the Rio Olympics.

Nick Briant and Richard Kelly will be part of the 12-man panel for the men's tournament.

South African Craig Joubert, who refereed the 2011 Rugby World Cup final between the All Backs and France is also in the group.

"A few years ago when I first heard that rugby was to be an Olympic sport, I started dreaming about returning to Sevens," Joubert said.

"The environment remains as close-knit as I remember and the welcome from the Sevens family has been exceptionally warm. I'm thrilled to be selected in this group of officials as we build towards the Olympic Games in Rio.

New Zealand's top female referee Jess Beard will hold the whistle in the women's event.
