All Black greats visit All Whites training

The All Whites are counting down to the Oceania Nations Cup in Papua New Guinea next month -- their first step towards qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

To help his players understand what's required to reach a World Cup, coach Anthony Hudson called on a couple of blokes who know a thing or two about winning one.

The All Whites were in All Black at training today for a visit from Kiwi rugby royalty.

Wayne Smith and Sir John Kirwan were invited to pass on their thoughts of what makes a winning All Blacks culture to the All Whites.

"When you're in the jersey it's your opportunity to improve that legacy and make your mark," Smith said.

"And my message was unless you're really clear about why you're doing it and whom you're doing it for, if that's not bone-deep, then you're not going to achieve what you want to achieve."

Kirwan's message wasn't so much about rugby, but rather the pride he felt watching from Italy with his friends as the All Whites took on the World Champions in 2010.

"I walked in, they all laughed at me. 'It's going to be 5-0. New Zealand's useless,' and I'm going, 'Boys I'm a Kiwi. This ain't going to happen.'

"And I walked in afterwards and for a New Zealander overseas, it was a very proud moment."

And while encouraging the current crop to emulate the team of 2010, Kirwan suggested they draw inspiration from a more recent footballing underdog.

"We are Leicester as New Zealand football. It is possible; we can do it," he said.

"And when you believe in yourself and the people around you, you can be Claudio Ranieri. You can stand there with Bocelli."

The All Whites' road to Russia begins in less than three weeks.
