The Kiwis have dodged a bullet and potentially a fatal shot, with Shaun Johnson narrowly avoiding a date with the NRL judiciary.

The star halfback has been charged with a grade one tripping offence on Dragons hooker Mitch Rein in the 55th minute of the Warriors 26-10 victory on Sunday afternoon.

But his previously clean record has helped him out - the offence doesn't carry enough points to warrant a suspension, leaving him free to play the Kangaroos in Newcastle on Friday night.

Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney will be a relieved man, having already lost playmaking options Kieran Foran, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Tuimoala Lolohea and Thomas Leuluai.

Johnson's likely to be the only recognised half in the Kiwis this week, with backrower Tohu Harris tipped be named in the number 6 jersey.
