Video: Emotional Ellis in last hurrah for Crusaders

It was a tear-filled farewell for Crusaders stalwart Andy Ellis as he announced today that this Super Rugby season will be his last.

Addressing the media the veteran halfback had to pause on several occasions as the finality of his decision hit home.

He wiped tears from his eyes and also had to take some time out before talking about his reasons on why the 2016 season will be his last, though he will continue to play for the  Kobelco Steelers in club for two more seasons.

A 10-year veteran for the Crusaders, Ellis has been one of the franchise's best known and most liked characters - and this weekend will become just the third player to chalk up 150 games for the red and blacks. He joins hooker Corey Flynn and prop and good friend Wyatt Crockett.

This weekend the Crusaders will play Australian leaders the Waratahs in Christchurch.

Ellis was part of two world cup squads, and he was the player that kicked the ball into touch as the All Blacks clinched victory in the 2011 world cup final.,

Coach Todd Blackadder, who is also leaving at season's end, says Ellis is one player who will certainly be missed.

"Andy has such enormous character and such boundless energy that he makes a huge impact on those around him."

"He has been an important leader in this group for a number of years now and has really helped to shape this team. We have been lucky to have a player of his calibre for 150 games and counting, and we will be very sorry to see him go."

"But there is no doubt he will leave a legacy here, particularly in the way he has helped to mentor and develop our younger players."
