Video: New Zealand athletes not involved in latest doping scandal, says Drug Free Sport NZ

Drug Free Sport New Zealand chief executive Graeme Steel is confident no Kiwis are caught up in the latest doping scandal.

Thirty one athletes from 12 nations and six sports could be banned from this year's Rio de Janeiro Olympics after 454 doping samples were re-tested from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also said it would start re-testing Sochi 2014 winter Games samples after allegations of tarnished samples surfaced last week. In an effort to crack down on cheats during the Olympics, the IOC said those found to have tested positive for banned substances would not be competing in Rio. Steel is positive that none of the 31 athletes are from New Zealand.

"We're pretty confident in our athletes generally, I understand there has been no contact to the New Zealand Olympic Committee, and [IOC] have been contacting national committees, so for those reasons I think we can be pretty confident it doesn't involve us," Steel told Newshub.

The IOC says they keep tests for 10 years to retest, and Steel says it's a common practice.

"That's an important tool that most anti-doping organizations are using these days because the science is improving and we can find things now we couldn't a few years ago.

"Athletes need to know that just because they might have pass the first hurdle in terms of testing that down the track is may catch them out."
