Italy and Spain advance, Croatian “thugs” take the headlines

Italy and Spain have booked spots in the knockout stages of Euro 2016 but it wasn’t the football making the headlines after another incident marred the day’s action.

Croatian fans hurled flares onto the ground late into their match with the Czech Republic in St-Etienne.

Play was halted for 10 minutes as security attempted to break up fights and stewards ensured then playing surface was safe for the match to continue.

Croatian coach Ante Cacic has labelled a section of the Balkan side’s supporters as ‘sports terrorists’ in a scathing attack on the incident. We were exposed to the terror of hooligans who have no place in sports arenas and I sincerely hope they will be identified and brought to justice," he said.

"They are terrorists, sports terrorists, a specific group. Unfortunately, they still exist and even enjoy some kind of support at home.”

"This is just a handful of thugs, maybe a dozen, but many Croatian patriots, including the players who wear the shirt with so much pride and passion, are now ashamed in front of the whole of Europe."

UEFA said disciplinary proceedings would be opened on Saturday once they had received official reports from the match delegate and referee Mark Clattenburg.

The Czechs, who had pulled a goal back after falling 2-0 behind, grabbed a last-gasp equaliser and Cacic said the trouble no doubt deprived his distracted team of victory.

Meanwhile two goals from Alvaro Morata has propelled defending champions Spain into the last 16 with a 3-0 victory over turkey in Nice.

Spain dominated the entire 90 minutes and never looked like losing after Morata headed home Nolito’s cross in the 34 minute.

Italy and Sweden produced a dire affair in Toulouse as neither side threatened the opposing goal throughout the majortity of the match.

Striker Eder broke the deadlock in the 88th minute to send the Italian fans into a state of delirium as the 2012 finalists advanced through to the second round with two wins from two matches.

Sweden need to win their final group match against Belgium to have any chance of qualifying.
