Video: New Zealand coach behind Brazil women's Sevens charge

By David Di Somma

It's one thing to coach your own national team at an Olympics, but it's another to coach another country's - especially if it's a Brazilian team at Rio.

And that's where Chris Neill comes in.

He is in charge of the Brazilian women's seven team - and has been since 2013.

Before that he was the Canterbury sevens coach.

Born in Napier, the ex-soldier has overseen huge development in the game in Brazil as the sport prepares to make its Olympic debut.

This will be South America's first Olympic games, and also the first time the games have been held in a Portuguese-speaking country. Neill says his own version of the language is "pigeon Portuguese".

As host nation Brazil is guaranteed a start, the makeup of the competition will be known after the final qualifying tournament in Dublin this weekend. New Zealand and Australia are seen as the two favourites for Olympic gold, with the green and gold's the current World Series champions.

With the competition running from August 6-11, the Sevens gold medals will be among the first team medals to be decided in Rio.

Brazil isn't expected to be a podium contender, but Neill is hoping to finish top eight at least
