Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has backed NRL boss Todd Greenberg's decision to hand out life bands for fixers.

League was thrown into turmoil on Thursday when NSW Police confirmed they were probing allegations of match-fixing.

Greenberg said the game's administrators would come down with their full weight on anyone found guilty of conspiring to fix the outcome of a game.

While it is no more than allegations at this stage, Bennett believes it's only fair that fixers are punished.

"If they're proven allegations I think we'll all be pretty shattered and I don't think anybody will be looking for a lot of sympathy for them," Bennett said.

"You know the rules, we got lots of lectures on the rules, we know it's a no-go zone so let's hope it just remains allegations.

"It's not the look that we want, but it's there. We have to deal with it."

Bennett also defended Sam Thaiday's 'virgin' comments after State of Origin, saying league players will have to be more cautious will a grown media presence surrounding the game.

"The game is changing enormously, it's media driven stuff. With regards to what we say, there are things we could have done five years ago and nobody would have even noticed or wouldn't have cared.

"Now we're a headline for it. It's a time in your life where you've got to be so careful what you say and what you do."

The Broncos will take on the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium at 5pm on Saturday.
