Valerie Adams: I want to win more than anybody

Valerie Adams is in the best physical shape she's been for more than two years, but her training isn't translating to competition.

While she's happy with her consistency, Adams is disappointed she's been unable to throw over 20 metres in her past three outings.

"You just have to be patient and work for it and not go out there and think 'I'm going to smash it," said Adams.

"I believe deep down it will come, it's just a matter of patience but it's been frustrating girl I tell you it's been frustrating."

Adams believes that's about to change.

She had a technical breakthrough last week, recognising a bad habit she'd developed last year to take pressure off her knee injury.

But Adams is in a very different space these days. She's gone from being the hunted to being the hunter.

That won't change her attitude in Rio though.

"Come August 12th Valerie Adams will be out there with her googly eyes and her don't f with me look and just wanting to smash the crap out of it.

"Whatever happens on the day happens, but all I know is that I'm going to leave my heart and soul out there not only for myself by for my country."

And after all the injuries, surgeries, and setbacks, Adams could be forgiven for being happy with that, regardless of the result.

But that's not the way she's wired.

"Our only goal is to go out there and try and defend our title and to defend that Olympic gold medal because everybody wants to win, and I want to win more than anybody else."

"Although it's tough, I'm up for the challenge and let the games begin."

44 days and counting.
