The All Blacks Sevens team are into their final preparations at a training camp in Ohope as they chase Olympic gold in Rio.

And as Olympic reporter Jeff McTainsh explains, for one man in particular, just getting to this point has been remarkable.

Representing New Zealand on sport's biggest stage couldn't have been further from the mind of Teddy Stanaway two years ago.

Severe concussion clouded his rugby future then, and drove him to make a clear decision.

"Being 30 and being able to hold a conversion with my kids was more important than running around and smashing my body," Stanaway said.

A number of head knocks in 2014 saw Stanaway opt out of the entire season last year with Bay of Plenty.

A decision influenced too by the early retirement of former All Blacks prop Ben Afeaki.

"He's not too much older than me. Being 25, 26 and thinking about hanging up the boots isn't sort of what you imagine."

Stanaway decided to make his return in the shorter form of the game, and that's when Sir Gordon Tietjens stepped in.

Renowned for getting the best out of his players, he offered Stanaway a rugby lifeline.

"Sevens is the ideal game for him," said Tietjens. "A few concussions problems, obviously a lot of concerns, but no he doesn't shirk off. He's very fit and focused."

For a man who once struggled to stand on his feet, Stanaway now stands in line for Olympic glory.
