The Hurricanes class of 2016 could be set to break their Super Rugby title drought against the Lions on Saturday night.

But how many of this year's team would make the best Hurricanes XV of all-time?

Newshub's John Day takes a look across 21 years of Hurricanes rugby and picks out his best starting fifteen.

While current fullback James Marshall is the unsung hero of the current Hurricanes team, no one is ever going to argue against Cullen being the best number 15 the Canes have ever had. Nehe Milner-Skudder was brilliant last year, and could've pushed Cullen if he wasn't injured this season.

Cory Jane can rightfully feel hard done by, but Tana is the godfather of Hurricanes rugby (even though he is the Blues coach). Lome Fa'atau was also another great right-winger, dominating the year when the Canes lost the Fog Final. You can't have a best-of Hurricanes team without Tana though.

Conrad Smith deserves a lot of credit for what the Hurricanes have become. They were a rabble when Mark Hammett decided to clean out the bad eggs, and Conrad was able to mould the leftovers into the Championship contenders they are today.

I was tempted to put in someone more reliable like a Paul Steinmetz or a Jason O'Halloran, but Nonu's 2015 season alone is enough for him to take his place at second-five. Nonu didn't really play that well for the Canes before being shipped around NZ, but his second stint was second to none.

What! No Jonah?! Sorry Jonah fans, but his best rugby was with the Blues. The Bus may not be in the best form right now, but his last few years with the Hurricanes have been frighteningly good.

Barrett is the first-five the Hurricanes have always been looking for. It was always said that the Hurricanes were just a good number 10 away from winning a title. Barrett is easily the best playmaker the Canes have had and should take them to the promised land more than once with the form he's in.

TJ Perenara or Piri Weepu? A bloody tough question. Perenara's got the try-scoring ability and is dynamic, but the sure head of Weepu wins out for me. If I'm going into a Super Rugby final, I want Piri on my team. The guy has ice in his veins, even though he looked like he was stuck in the mud clearing the ball from rucks later in his career.

Another tough call. Rodney So'oialo captained the Canes a record 49-times, but was not much more than a work-horse. Victor Vito will bring up 100 games for the franchise on Saturday before taking off to France. He's got far more strings to his bow than Rodders, and deserves his place at the back of the scrum.

2016 has been the Year of Ardie. Any concerns that this guy may not be able to live up to the hype have been blown out of the water. Kupu Vanisi was a cult hero, Chris Masoe was as hard as nails, but Ardie is next level.

Loved by the fans, feared by the opposition, Jerry Collins was awesome to watch. His bone-rattling hits are still vivid in the memory banks, and as good as Brad Shields has been, and will be, Jerry will forever be in the best Canes team of all-time.

Like the Hurricanes, Thrush just got better and better over time. The 2004 under-19 World Player of the Year took a long time to reach his potential, but when he did, it was worth waiting for. Thrush went from a workhorse journeyman to a bona fide All Black and deserves to be a Canes all-time great.

The Hurricanes really don't have a lot of quality when it comes to locks. James Broadhurst would've been close to making the side had he played this year, while the likes of Paul Tito and Dion Waller would beat up anyone in Super Rugby, but don't have the class to be included. One seasons been enough for me to put Fatialofa in the side based purely on potential.

The biggest calves in world rugby got through 101 games over eight seasons for the Canes which is quite a remarkable feat in itself. Tialata was much-maligned for his fitness, but the 136 kilogram tighthead was certainly the best the Canes have ever had.

Based purely on on-field performances, Andrew Hore would be right in the mix, but his off-field antics were partly to blame for the on-field disappointments. Dane Coles has turned into a mature leader on and off the field and can lay claims to being the best hooker in the world right now.

Reggie Goodes looks the goods, Ben Franks was solid as, but you can't go past the inaugural captain of the Hurricanes. Bull Allen, now a vegan who attends Destiny Church, was once one of the most feared props on the planet.

Mark Hammett, just kidding.

It's got to be Chris Boyd.

Incredible effort from Chris Boyd to deliver two finals in his only two years in charge. Sure, Hammett deserves a tiny bit of credit for clearing the decks and laying the foundation, but Boyd and John Plumtree's combination have turned the Hurricanes into the Championship winning team they always should've been.
