Kiwi gymnast Misha Koudinov eyes first Olympic final

A lot's changed since Misha Koudinov went to the 2006 Commonwealth Games as the youngest member of New Zealand's contingent.

"Back then I was 14, 15 or something. I really didn't know much in terms of how to take care of your body and mentally how to prepare," he told Newshub.

"I was just kind of a little kid, no clue, just doing my thing."

The Russian-born kiwi says he's learned a lot from his experiences over the ten years since.

"Now as you get older your body starts to suffer a little bit more, so you've got to know how to take care of it, do the proper rehabilitation."

Koudinov joins fellow artistic gymnast Courtney McGregor and trampolinist Dylan Schmidt at Rio 2016 to form New Zealand's biggest Olympic gym sports team in 50 years.

He says while getting used to the new equipment during training is a challenge, his physical training has been very good.

"Personally the parallel bars is the one event I have that I know is world class, so if I do a good job I could contend for perhaps a final.

"A good day in the all-around, which means the top 24 make the all-around final. So that's another possibility."

Koudinov is now based in the US, and says the training regime there is completely different to what he was used to growing up.

In New Zealand he would compete only two or three times a year, but when the US season started, on one occasion he competed every weekend for 10 weeks straight.

Koudinov is New Zealand's only Russian-born athlete at Rio 2016, and says he has been watching the doping fallout in his homeland from afar.

"I know on the gymnastics side they did get tested and no-one was doping.

"I do think if you didn't do it then you shouldn't be excluded, which they ended up not being, and they're here now and I fully support that decision."

Koudinov's Olympic quest starts on day one, when men's qualification for artistic gymnastics begins.
