A stray military grade 5.56 bullet has come through the wall of a Rio Equestrian media centre where New Zealand journalists have been working.
New Zealand media including Newshub journalists are at the venue and all are unharmed.
NZOC media manager Ashley Abbott said it is extremely lucky no one was harmed.
"We had a New Zealand team press attache in the workroom at the time and she got a fright but luckily nobody was hurt and she left the venue and came and advised the team," said Abbott.
"We are taking this very seriously and our team security liaison is in touch with the Government liaison here and local authorities."
The New Zealand Olympic Committee released a statement on Saturday afternoon, saying the bullet was likely fired unintentionally.
"The New Zealand police assessment is that the bullet was fired unintentionally rather than with intent," the statement read.
"We have advised all team members to remain within the accredited areas at the venue and travel bubble to bubble."
"We are aware of the incident and monitoring the investigation by the security forces. No one was hurt," a Rio2016 spokesman said.
The journalists are currently inside another work area which is protected by concrete walls.
