New Zealand's had arguably its most successful Olympics ever in Rio.

Friday's haul of medals - including three sailing medals and Tom Walsh's shot put bronze - has taken New Zealand's tally to 15, the most it's ever won.

It beats our 13-medal hauls in London in 2012 and Seoul, 1988.

The most successful Olympic Games for New Zealand in terms of gold medals remains 1984's Los Angeles Games. Perhaps aided by the absence of Russia and other Communist-bloc countries, New Zealand took home eight golds - but only one silver and two bronze.

It was a fine Friday on the water for the Kiwis, with Molly Meech and Alex Maloney getting the silver in the 49erFX, while Blair Tuke and Peter Burling claimed their gold having secured victory two races early.

Lisa Carrington also picked up a bronze medal in the K1 500m to add to her gold in the K1 200m, which makes her the first Kiwi female athlete to get two medals in a single Games.

But New Zealand's tally could get even bigger with a number of Kiwis still to compete, including the women's hockey team who'll take on Germany on Saturday in the bronze medal match, Quinten Rew in the 50km walk and Eliza McCartney in the final of the pole vault.

The last day of competition is August 21.
