The race to be ready for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is heading for a sprint finish.

With the opening ceremony set for August 6 (NZT) work has stepped up at Barra Olympic Park, the biggest of four venue clusters around Rio.

The "heart of the Games" features nine arenas hosting sixteen different sports, including the Rio Olympic Velodrome, Rio Aquatics Stadium and Olympic Tennis Centre.

Barra Olympic Park is also home to the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, home base for the 25,000 plus members of the media broadcasting and covering the Games.

The site on the edge of Lagoa de Jacarepaguá was formerly home to the motorsport park - Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, which hosted the Brazilian Grand Prix a number of times until 1989.

The track was demolished in 2012 to make way for the Olympic venues, but the construction of those stadiums has been mired with delays, with the velodrome the last of the venues to be fully completed just last week.

With the big venues complete, the smaller jobs now need to be finished with workers laying pavers, painting roads, concreting and finishing the landscaping. But the finish line for the marathon that is preparing for an Olympic Games is fast approaching.
