Underdog Trent Jones into BMX semi-final

Kiwi BMX rider Trent Jones has stormed into the semi-finals at Olympic Centre.

He had ground to make up, going into the heats ranked 25th out of 32 riders, but Jones' relished as the underdog beating two world champions to qualify second fastest in his group behind flying Dutchman Jelle Van Gorkom.

Jones crossed the line in 35.455 seconds in his fastest run, gathering a third place and two seconds.

Top qualifier, France's Joris Daudet, crashed out in the second run and failed to progress.

He's flying the flag for the kiwis with London silver medalist Sarah Walker failing to qualify for the games.

The 22-year-old needs a top four finish in the semi-finals tomorrow to contest the medals.
