The Tasman Rugby Union have parted ways with winger Zac Guildford before the start of the Mitre 10 Cup season.

Guildford was due to make his debut for the Makos, but won't be part of coach Leon MacDonald's squad, which includes 16 Super Rugby contracted players.

The franchise announced their squad to contest this season's Mitre 10 Cup on Facebook.

Tasman CEO Peter Lewis put out a short statement on Guildford saying: "Due to the nature of the agreement with Zac, we are unable to comment further on any aspect of this."

The former All Black has had a troubled off field past with alcohol, leading to his release from the Crusaders in 2014.

After a stint in France, Guildford was given a lifeline from the Waratahs this season, but was released at the end of June with coach Daryl Gibson citing that it was best for the 27-year-old to return home.
