It's regarded as one of cricket's toughest tests, but exactly who'll line up for the Blackcaps in the opening match of their series in India is unclear.
Play gets underway in Kanpur Thursday afternoon (NZT), and competition for a place at the top of the order isn't the only thing that's heating up.
In fact the only thing that's sure to be dry at the ironically named "Green Park" is the wicket which - a day before the test - is already looking like an ANZAC biscuit, which means only one thing.
"Unless some grass grows over the coming two days I think there'll be plenty of assistance for the spinners," said Blackcaps coach Mike Hesson.
It leaves Hesson trying to figure out whether to play Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Mark Craig, or perhaps all three.
And just who Hesson will call on to face India's spinners at the top of the order remains uncertain as well.
Martin Guptill was considered lucky to earn a place in the squad, and he faces pressure from Luke Ronchi who impressed selectors with a rapid century in a warm-up match in Delhi.
