New Zealand's bowling attack will have their work cut out after India won the toss and opted to have a bat in the first Test at Kanpur.

The Blackcaps will start all three of their spinners, along with Trent Boult and Neil Wagner in their attack.

Captain Kane Williamson was disappointed to lose the toss, but said the team has settled in well to the harsh Indian conditions.

"Would have been nice," Williamson said about the toss.

"Preparation's been good. Acclimatised to the heat in Delhi, but I supposed the wicket looks a little bit different."

Indian captain Virat Kohli said he was honoured to lead the side heading into the 500th Test.

"Looks like a pretty good wicket for day one," Kohli said.

"The start has been good in West Indies, preparation has been really good, the intensity is really high."
