Ryan Crotty cherishing All Blacks start in Christchurch

All Blacks second-five Ryan Crotty's striving to make the number twelve jersey his own this season.

There were plenty of doubters wondering if Crotty could fill the hole left by the departure of Ma'a Nonu and injuries to Sonny Bill Williams and Charlie Ngatai.

After five starts this year, Crotty hasn't put a foot wrong, but isn't content yet.

"It is satisfying to perform well, but you're only as good as your last game," Crotty said.

"We need to keep building those combinations and keep getting better so we can continue to play at a high level."

Crotty is the joint leading try-scorer in the Rugby Championship with three alongside Julian Savea heading into tomorrow's clash with the Springboks.

The Crusaders midfielder will line-up for his 21st Test match tomorrow night, but it will be his first start in his home town of Christchurch.

Crotty made his debut in 2013, but has only played one Test at AMI Stadium last year off the bench against the Pumas.

Being in the run-on side this time means a lot to the proud Cantabrian.

"I think I got about 10 minutes off the bench last time we played Argentina [in Christchurch].

"I've been asking all the guys for their spare tickets this week so hopefully I can have a good performance in front of my family.

"Any opportunity you get to put on the black jersey is an extremely proud moment.

"To do it in front of my family and my friends at home in front of a few one-eyed Canterbury fans is certainly special and a moment I'll cherish."
