Kiwi drivers have had their fair share of success at Bathurst.

At the top of the list is Otahuhu born Jim Richards who with seven wins, is second only to the late Peter Brock with nine wins under his belt.

But no New Zealander has had a bigger impact on the sport than Greg Murphy.

Murph topped the podium four times at Bathurst, but his greatest achievement was his qualifying lap in 2003. Dubbed the 'Lap of the Gods', Murphy’s time of 2.06.8594 wasn’t beaten for over a decade.

What a contrast to 12 months earlier, when a fuel spill in pit lane earned Murph an unprecedented five-minute penalty. The punishment was brutal… Murph’s reaction was ever better.

Part of Murphy's appeal is his passion for racing and winning… and not getting on with Marcos Ambrose. The pair came together in 2005 at the top of the mountain, the crash stopped traffic – but not the show.

Now part of the Supercars commentary team, Murphy's feats played a big part in inspiring the current crop of Kiwi drivers lining up for this year's Bathurst 1000.
