Shane Van Gisbergen chases hometown V8 Supercar glory

It's an outside chance, but still a chance, that Shane van Gisbergen could become the first ever New Zealand Supercar Champion at his home round at Pukekohe this weekend.

As long as it's got wheels and he's in control - then Van Gisbergen is happy.

The 27-year-old is a racer, plain and simple. He'll talk winning races but not claiming the Supercar title with a round to spare.

"I don't know what the equations are and I don't really care," said Van Gisbergen.

"We've just got to get as many points as we can."

Van Gisbergen has always preferred to let his driving do the talking.

A precocious talent, he was just 18 years of age when Stone Brothers Racing signed him up.

After six seasons it turned sour when the ‘Wild Child’ went bush, and his former mentors called in the lawyers.

"It was an interesting period," he admits.

"If it had been Stone Brothers Fords I would have stayed, but I didn't want to be in the new team.

"It turned out to be the right call."

So while his old team floundered - he was back winning.

2016 has already seen ‘The Giz’ win the European sports car title, while his move to Red Bull racing has seen him eclipse even his six-time champion teammate Jamie Whincup.

He credits the success to growing up.

"Back in the day I just wanted to win every race and just kill everybody.

"Now, even if you don't win, as long as you done your best job you've got to be happy with yourself."

So his secret to going faster was slowing down, just a little.
