All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster has a welcome problem on his hands for Sunday’s (NZT) Test against South Africa – choosing starters from a suddenly flourishing stock of midfield riches.

“The exciting thing about midfield selection is that we’ve got a number of options at the moment,” said Foster.

Not least of which is breakthrough sensation Anton Lienert-Brown, the 21-year-old having made an indelible impression after starts in both the 12 and 13 jerseys, including arguably a man of the match performance in Buenos Aires.

“He showed great composure. The way he prepared and dealt with the challenge was the most pleasing.

“He wasn’t encumbered with too much pressure. If it was on to run he ran, if it was on to offload he threw it.

“He just played his game.”

Foster believed the Christchurch-product looked more comfortable at outside centre.

“It looks like he probably enjoys 13 a little bit more, with more time and space.”

However the travel demands endured by the squad haven’t been overlooked, and a lengthy flight from South America coupled with a short turnaround to this weekend’s game means the All Blacks brass are being typically cautious with their approach to rest and rotation.

“We’ve learned in the past that the importance of being really smart at selection time at this time of the year.

“We’ve got George [Moala] who’s one hundred percent now and jumping out of his skin, and we’ve got Malakai [Fekiota] who’s done a great job for us there.”

While ensuring players are staying as fatigue-free is possible is a priority, Foster makes it clear that the focus remains on fielding the strongest, yet most practical, side possible.

“The objective is to have the best possible team on the park on Saturday (Sunday NZT), so making sure we assess energy levels carefully the next few days to make sure we have the right people on the park to do the job.”
