Most athletes take a break from training after an Olympic campaign, but not Hamish Bond.

The two-time gold medallist has swapped his oars for a bike and will tackle the Tour of Southland this week - more than 800 kilometres of racing over seven days.

It was Bond's idea to enter a team at this year's race and he picked his team very carefully.

He's recruited three fellow rowers and two professional cyclists, including former US rider Michael Torkler, whose specialty is the hill climb.

Bond previously took place in the Tour of Southland back in 2009 and learned the hard way that training is key for the event.

Bond finished 68th back in 2009, but he is more prepared for this year's event. He has lost 10 kilos and believes he's prepared as he can be.

"Success for us would be feeling we had an impact on the race; it's not necessarily about results," said Bond.

"It's just about feeling as though we did more than just take part."
