For the first time since October 3 2014 and 19 matches, Northland has won a game in the NPC, with a 48-27 win over Waikato in Whangarei.
A first-half master class set up the win, but in the second half, the Taniwha had to defend out of their skin to set up the famous win.
It has been a week to forget for Waikato, who lost the Ranfurly Shield to Canterbury on Wednesday.
Patience was the key for Northland's first try. After building 11 phases, Dan Hawkins threw a perfect cut-out ball to fullback Solomon Alaimalo, who then passed to Jordan Hyland to score in the corner.
Northland crossed 10 minutes later when prop Phil Kite crashed over close to the line after, once again, Northland had built 11 phases.
Northland's third try was the best of the game. When Jone Macilai broke the line off the scrum, he eventually found Kara Pryor in support, who then gave the ball to Matt Matich, who ran 20 metres to extend the lead.
Waikato's game in the first half was full of mistakes, and after a solid attack at the Northland line, they eventually crossed out wide when fullback Jordan Trainor scored.
Northland, however, did have the last say of the half when Macilai broke the tackle of Trainor and dived over in the corner as the halftime siren sounded.
Northland led 32-8 at halftime.
Waikato came out firing in the second half when Iliesa Ratuva Tavuyara broke through the defence to score under the posts, and then Sefo Kautai scored out wide to close to gap to 10 points.
The home side kept its composure and defended valiantly.
Opportunities to score did not come along often, but Northland did land three penalty goals to make the lead 41-22 with 10 minutes remaining.
Waikato captain Whetu Douglas then scored a marvellous try, which started from a counter attack by Trainor to set up a thrilling finish.
But Northland had the last say when Dan Hawkins slipped through the Waikato defence and crawled over the line to set up the famous victory.
Northland will head south and face Southland next weekend in Invercargill while Waikato will look to salvage some pride when they face Hawke's Bay next weekend.
